What you will do

Explore majestic Mount Vesuvius on a fascinating excursion that will take you to the crater rim, along panoramic trails and through the striking Valley of Hell. Discover the geological and natural wonders of this iconic volcano and enjoy an unforgettable adventure.

Starting at an altitude of 1,000 metres, the trail will lead you directly to the volcano’s crater rim. Once you reach the Volcanological Guides Station, at 1,175 metres above sea level, you will continue along a flat section offering breathtaking views over the crater opening, where you can admire its fascinating geological formation.

Continuing along the south-eastern slope, you will descend through a landscape rich in pyroclastic material, pioneer plants and spectacular views over the Campanian plain and the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, until you reach Piazzale di Ottaviano, at an altitude of 1,100 metres above sea level. From here, Park Trail No. 6, known as Strada Matrone, will guide you along a descent of approximately 4 km, with a detour leading to Trail No. 1, in the Valley of Hell.

This route is ideal for observing the characteristic geological structure of the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex. The Valley of Hell separates Mount Somma from Vesuvius, the younger volcano, and is partly covered by spectacular lava formations produced by twentieth-century eruptions. Here you can admire fractures, ropy lava and lava domes.

After exploring the valley, you will reach Piazzale della Legalità, in the municipality of Ottaviano, and the Cognoli di Levante, home to one of the most beautiful formations of ropy lava on Mount Vesuvius, dating back to the 1929 eruption. Cut by a deep fracture that is home to numerous species of ferns, this natural wonder will give you the feeling of entering the depths of the Earth.

The hike is open to everyone and does not involve any particular technical difficulties. However, it is not suitable for people with walking difficulties or wheelchair users.

For those arriving via the motorway, take the Torre del Greco exit and follow the signs for Vesuvius National Park (NA).

Tickets for Vesuvius National Park can only be purchased online at https://bit.ly/4c8HCxs, no more than 30 days before the date of the visit.

If tickets are sold out, check the “GRAN CONO DEL VESUVIO – last minute” event. In this section, 10 additional tickets will be released one hour before the start of each time slot and will be valid for that specific slot. For example, at 10:30 a.m., 10 new tickets will be released for the 11:30 a.m. time slot.

Parking facilities are subject to a fee and are not managed by our operators.

  • We recommend purchasing your crater admission ticket first, as access is limited and your preferred time slot may not be available.
  • Only after checking availability should you purchase your parking ticket.
  • Before boarding the shuttle, make sure you already have a valid ticket for admission to the crater.
