What you will do

Did you know that in Vesuvius National Park you can explore one of the most precious and highly protected natural areas in the region?

Following the trail through the Tirone-Alto Vesuvio Forest Reserve, across the scenic Piano delle Ginestre, you will immerse yourself in the unspoilt nature of the Park. The wide and mostly flat route extends through a reserve covering approximately 1,000 hectares.

After passing through the entrance gate, you will enter a dense stone pine forest, created through reforestation projects designed to stabilise the fragile slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Along the dry-stone walls made of volcanic rock, you may spot navelwort, a distinctive herbaceous plant recognised by its fleshy, rounded leaves with a small central hollow.

Accompanied by an Environmental Hiking Guide, you will cross a variety of landscapes, from lush green areas and panoramic viewpoints to remarkable volcanic formations. You will observe the lava flows from the 1944 eruption, now covered with lichens and pioneer plant species, identify animal tracks and discover nature’s extraordinary ability to reclaim the volcanic landscape.

The excursion crosses the heart of the “Somma-Vesuvius and Miglio d’Oro” Biosphere Reserve, included in 1997 in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves under the MAB Programme, within the “cultural landscape” category. It is an opportunity to understand the value of protected natural areas and the importance of preserving the biodiversity of Mount Vesuvius.

IMPORTANT

The walk is open to everyone and does not involve any particular technical difficulties. However, it is not suitable for people with walking difficulties or wheelchair users.

YOUR EXPERIENCE IN BRIEF

  • Departure from the meeting point at Contrada Osservatorio 21, Ercolano (NA) — 10:00 a.m. during the summer season and 2:00 p.m. during the winter season
  • Approximately 6 km walk through the Tirone–Alto Vesuvio Forest Reserve
  • Panoramic stops and a historical and naturalistic presentation
  • Return along the same route

TECHNICAL DETAILS

  • Length: 6 km round trip
  • Elevation gain: 80 metres
  • Difficulty: easy, also suitable for children
  • Duration: 3 hours for the short route; up to 4 hours for the complete route, with a different finishing point from the starting point
  • Route: departure from Contrada Osservatorio 21, Ercolano (NA). Landmarks: Kona Restaurant / Douce Atmosphere Restaurant.

HOW TO REACH THE MEETING POINT

For those arriving via the motorway, take the Torre del Greco exit and follow the signs for Vesuvius National Park (NA).

PURCHASING VESUVIUS TICKETS

Tickets for Vesuvius National Park can only be purchased online at https://bit.ly/4c8HCxs, no more than 30 days before the date of the visit.

If tickets are sold out, check the “GRAN CONO DEL VESUVIO – last minute” event. In this section, 10 additional tickets will be released one hour before the start of each time slot and will be valid for that specific slot. For example, at 10:30 a.m., 10 new tickets will be released for the 11:30 a.m. time slot.

PARKING

Parking facilities are subject to a fee and are not managed by our operators.

  • We recommend purchasing your crater admission ticket first, as access is limited and your preferred time slot may not be available.
  • Only after checking availability should you purchase your parking ticket.
  • Before boarding the shuttle, make sure you already have a valid ticket for admission to the crater.
