Discover one of the most fascinating trails on Mount Vesuvius, with its evocative name: the Valley of Hell. The route will take you into the heart of the volcano, where you will be captivated by its imposing presence and surrounded by wild nature.
The Valley of Hell is a place of contrasts, where nature first destroyed with unstoppable force and then brought life back with remarkable generosity. During this scenic walk, you will explore the eastern side of the Somma-Vesuvius complex, admiring the impressive Mount Somma and Mount Vesuvius from below.
The trail begins at an altitude of 965 metres and alternates downhill and flat sections, offering an ideal route for observing the typical geological structure of the Somma-Vesuvius complex. The Valley of Hell separates Mount Somma from the younger Mount Vesuvius and is partly covered by lava flows from twentieth-century eruptions, now colonised by the lichen Stereocaulon vesuvianum.
Descending into the Valley from the Ercolano side, you will reach the Arena, the Natural Arch and the Cognoli di Levante, home to one of the most beautiful formations of ropy lava on Mount Vesuvius, dating back to the 1929 eruption. The formation is crossed by a deep fracture that hosts numerous species of ferns and creates the striking sensation of entering the depths of the Earth.
After reaching the highest section of the route, you can descend along a trail of lapilli and volcanic ash, which will lead you back to the main path, completing an adventure filled with breathtaking views and fascinating geological discoveries.
