Live an authentic handcrafted weaving experience in the heart of Irpinia, in the medieval historic center of Bisaccia, at the foot of the evocative Ducal Castle, in the province of Avellino. An activity that leads you to discover an ancient and precious art, preserved in the only hand-weaving workshop in Irpinia, where tradition and territory are deeply intertwined.
The handcrafted weaving experience begins in the artisan workshop of Jessica, a young master weaver and guardian of a knowledge passed down through generations. She will guide you on a 1-hour walking tour through the narrow streets of Bisaccia Vecchia, sharing stories about the strong bond between the village, local traditions, and artisanal weaving.
Back in the workshop, you will have the opportunity to closely observe an ancient pedal-powered manual loom and, when possible, watch a live demonstration to understand the gestures and rhythms of an art unchanged over time.
You will then take part in a weaving workshop on a frame loom, guided step by step by the master weaver. You will create a small decorative tapestry, a true handmade textile artwork made with natural fibers and dried flowers.
During the activity, a convivial aperitif is included and, at the end of the experience, you will take home the handcrafted piece you created and receive a certificate of participation, a tangible memory of an authentic experience in Irpinia.
Book now and rediscover the value of traditional craftsmanship, enjoying an authentic activity in Campania.
The aperitif included in the experience consists of water, juice, tea, crisps, biscuits, and local taralli.
The handcrafted item you will create and take home at the end of the experience is an artisanal tapestry, with approximate dimensions:
The tapestry is an ancient textile art form, especially widespread during the medieval period as a decorative and narrative element in castles and historic residences. Created on manual looms, it required time, skill, and great precision, making each piece unique and one of a kind. In Alta Irpinia, in villages such as Bisaccia, Calitri, and Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi, decorative weaving represented a domestic and rural knowledge, passed down through generations as an expression of the Irpinian territory and the inner areas of Campania.
